Our Privacy Principles
Screen-time data stays on your device
On Android, we use Android's Usage Stats API and Accessibility Services to provide app blocking. On iOS, we use Apple's Screen Time API (FamilyControls / DeviceActivity framework). Raw screen-time and app-usage history are processed on your device and are not stored on our servers. Account, subscription, rewards, analytics, support, task sync, chat, social, competition, and optional AI feature data are handled separately as described in this policy.
Analytics for product improvement
We collect analytics data to understand how the app is used and to improve it. This includes session replay through PostHog and structured event tracking through our own backend. We use pseudonymous identifiers for analytics unless you connect an account or use features that require account-linked processing.
No current sale or targeted-ad sharing
We do not sell personal data for money. We use Google Analytics on our website for aggregate traffic and conversion measurement, with advertising storage and ad personalization disabled. We do not currently use Meta Pixel or advertising SDKs for cross-site or cross-app targeted advertising. If we add advertising or targeted measurement partners in the future, we will update this policy and any required privacy choices before enabling them.
Access and rewards
BreakAway may offer full access for free while the product is being polished. When paid plans are enabled, pricing varies by region. Eligible milestones, referrals, and competition rewards may create saved access credits or Free Days if those programs are available for your account.
What Data We Collect
The categories below explain what BreakAway collects, why we use it, and when it is processed on-device, by our backend, or by service providers.
Identifiers and Account Data
Device and Account Identifiers
When you install BreakAway, we generate or receive identifiers that help us recognize your installation, account, subscription, rewards, and support activity. These identifiers may include pseudonymous device identifiers, account IDs from supported sign-in providers, subscription identifiers, push notification tokens, and internal user IDs. We use these identifiers to:
- Recognize your app installation and any account you choose to connect
- Track your streaks and earned Free Days
- Operate subscriptions, referrals, rewards, fraud prevention, support, security, notifications, and analytics
Analytics & Product Improvement Data
We collect analytics data to understand how the app is used, find bugs, improve reliability, and measure which features are working. Analytics may be processed by PostHog and by our backend.
PostHog (Session Replay & Product Analytics)
We use PostHog to record session replays and product analytics. Session replays may capture interaction metadata such as screens visited, taps, scrolling, device context, and masked UI snapshots. We configure PostHog to mask text and images by default, but you should not enter information in BreakAway that you would not want processed for product analytics, support, reliability, or security purposes.
You can turn off product analytics and session replay in the app under Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics. Disabling analytics does not disable data processing that is necessary for account access, subscriptions, rewards, task sync, chat, support, security, legal compliance, or other requested app features.
Supabase Analytics Events
Structured events are logged to our backend and may include:
- Screen views: Which screens you navigate to
- App blocking and configuration events: Block reasons, modes, settings, and related configuration signals. We do not store raw screen-time history as analytics events.
- Time block creation, activation, deletion, and completion
- Settings and feature changes
- Errors and crash signals
- Onboarding step completion
Optional Collection (Your Choice)
Account and Sign-In Options
You can use BreakAway with a device-based account or choose to sign in with Google, Apple, or email/password depending on platform and feature availability. Sign-in data is handled through Supabase Auth and is used for account access, backup, restore, subscription continuity, fraud prevention, security, and support.
Google Sign-In
You can optionally sign in with Google. The app labels this "Back up streaks and rewards." Google Sign-In serves these purposes:
- Cross-device backup & restore: Your streaks, rewards, milestones, free days, daily success history, and subscription status may be synced to your account so you can restore them on another device.
- Subscription continuity: Google-linked account data may help us restore or associate subscription status across devices.
- Referral fraud prevention: When you redeem a referral invite code, BreakAway may use Google account information to help verify that the referrer and referred user are not the same person.
- Analytics continuity: If you connect or disconnect an account, analytics identifiers may be updated so activity is associated with the correct account state.
We may receive your Google display name, email address, profile photo URL, and Google account ID. Some display information is cached locally for the app UI; account identifiers and related authentication metadata may be stored by Supabase Auth and our fraud-prevention systems.
Apple Sign-In
On iOS, you can sign in with Apple. We may receive your Apple identity token, email address or Apple private relay address, and name if Apple provides it. This information is used to create and maintain your BreakAway account, restore purchases and progress, support account security, and help you sign back in.
Email and Password
If you create an email/password account, your email address and authentication records are processed through Supabase Auth. Passwords are handled by Supabase Auth; we do not store plaintext passwords. We may send account verification, password reset, security, and service emails related to this account.
Data We Sync to Our Servers
The following data is stored on our servers (Supabase) to enable core functionality:
- Streak and rewards data: Your current streak, total days, and earned Free Days
- Referral tracking: Referral codes, referral status, device/account identifiers, reward eligibility, and fraud-prevention data needed to operate the referral program
- Promo code data: Promo code redemptions, reward amounts, and redemption timestamps needed to apply promotional access and prevent abuse
- Subscription status: Whether you have an active subscription or Free Days balance
- Device and transfer data: Active-device identifiers, device-transfer state, and account-linking records used to restore progress, avoid duplicate reward tracking, and protect competition integrity
- Onboarding and preference data: Answers you choose to provide during onboarding, such as goals, obstacles, estimated usage, target limits, and notification motivations
- Task sync data, if enabled: Task titles, notes, due dates, reminders, steps, and location reminder information needed to restore your tasks across devices
- Profile, friends, and social data: Nickname, profile photo, public profile fields, friend requests, friend relationships, blocks, reports, and related timestamps needed to operate social features. Profile photos you upload through BreakAway may be stored as public media URLs so they can display in friends, chats, challenges, and related social features.
- Competition and challenge data: Competition entries, group memberships, invite status, results, rankings, eligibility checks, entry-day and Free Day balances, refunds, daily success snapshots, integrity checks, and disqualification records needed to operate competitions and prevent abuse
- Friend and group chat data: Chat rooms, room membership, messages, media, reactions, replies, read status, blocks, reports, and timestamps needed to operate chats and competitions
- Notification data: Device push tokens, notification preferences, notification delivery events, and related timestamps used to deliver task reminders, competition updates, friend requests, support replies, and other app notifications you enable
- Support and feedback: If you report a problem or contact support (see "Support & Feedback" below for details)
Data Retention: We retain account, device, subscription, rewards, and progress data for as long as needed to provide BreakAway, maintain streaks and Free Days, restore accounts, prevent fraud and abuse, comply with legal or tax obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our terms. If you connect Google, Apple, or email/password, your progress data may be linked to that account identity and retained for cross-device access and subscription continuity.
Sensitive Data
Some features may involve data that privacy laws treat as sensitive, such as precise location for task reminders, account login information, message contents, audio recordings, photos or videos you choose to upload, onboarding answers about your goals or obstacles, and accessibility-derived screen signals used for blocking. We use this information only to provide the feature you enabled, secure the app, provide support, comply with law, or enforce our Terms. We do not sell sensitive personal data or use it for targeted advertising.
Important Note
You can delete your account and eligible associated data at any time through app settings. Some records may remain where needed for security, legal compliance, fraud prevention, tax, transaction, dispute, or safety reasons, and some chat content may remain visible to other room members as described below.
Friend Sharing Feature
When you choose to share your streak count with friends, BreakAway generates a shareable message that you can send through any messaging platform of your choice (text, WhatsApp, social media, etc.). We do not store or access your contacts, messages, or social media accounts. The sharing happens entirely through your chosen platform.
Friends, Competitions, and Social Features
If you use friends, challenges, groups, leaderboards, or competitions, BreakAway stores and displays the profile, participation, progress, result, and reward information needed to operate those features. Other participants may see your nickname, profile photo, challenge status, competition results, ranking, and related progress information that the feature is designed to share. We may process competition integrity and abuse-prevention data to verify eligibility, prevent fraud, resolve disputes, and enforce rules.
Friend and Group Chats
If you use BreakAway chats with friends or competition groups, your chat messages and chat media are stored on our backend so room members can send, receive, sync, and view the conversation across devices. Chat messages are private to room members under our access rules, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Authorized administrators and service providers may access chat records when needed to operate the service, investigate abuse or reports, comply with law, enforce our Terms, or maintain safety and security.
When you delete your account, BreakAway removes you from chat rooms and detaches your account identifier from prior chat messages where applicable. Prior messages or media may remain visible to the other room members unless deleted under an available message-deletion feature or removed for policy, legal, or safety reasons.
Support & Feedback
When you report a problem, suggest a feature, or contact support through the app, you choose what information to share with us. Here's what gets collected:
Information You Provide:
- Feedback type: Bug report, feature request, improvement suggestion, or general feedback
- Title and description: Your written explanation of the issue or suggestion
- Screenshots, videos, or screen recordings: Optional attachments you choose to include.
- Email address: Optional — only if you want us to respond directly
Automatic Diagnostic Information (Bug Reports Only):
To help us fix issues, bug reports automatically include technical context:
- Device info: Android version, device model, and manufacturer
- App info: BreakAway version and build number
- Permission statuses: Which permissions are enabled (accessibility, usage stats, etc.)
- Blocking settings: Active time blocks and blocking modes (not which specific apps you block)
- Streak data: Current streak count and milestone progress
Your Choice
All feedback is voluntary. You decide what to share. We do not create a support report unless you initiate one. Diagnostic context helps us troubleshoot issues faster and may include the technical and account information listed above.
Support Conversations:
If you start a support conversation, your messages and any media you send are stored so our team can help you. Conversations include:
- Text messages between you and our support team
- Images, videos, screen recordings, or other files you choose to share
- Conversation status and timestamps
Support data and support media are stored on our servers (Supabase) and are only accessible to our support team and authorized administrators who need access to operate support, safety, and security workflows.
Email Communications
We may send emails related to your account, subscription, purchases, support requests, legal notices, security, product changes, and service updates. These transactional emails are part of operating BreakAway.
If we send marketing or promotional emails, we will use honest sender information and subject lines, include a clear unsubscribe mechanism, honor unsubscribe requests as required by law, and include a valid physical postal address in the message. You may opt out of marketing emails without losing access to transactional service emails.
AI Features
BreakAway includes AI-powered features that process your input to provide assistance:
AI Task Manager
You can talk to our AI assistant to create and manage tasks. When you use this feature:
- Your text messages, recent conversation context, relevant task details, pending task proposals, and saved location names may be sent to Google's Gemini AI (primary) or Anthropic's Claude AI (fallback) to understand your intent and create or modify tasks
- We log AI usage and diagnostic metadata to operate limits, debug failures, monitor abuse, and manage reliability and cost
- We do not use your AI conversations to train our own models
- Tasks you create are stored locally on your device and may sync to our backend if you enable task sync
Reality Check AI (Break Reflection)
When you want to access a blocked app, you can chat with the AI to reflect on why you need access. This conversation:
- Is processed by Google's Gemini AI (primary) or Anthropic's Claude AI (fallback) to help you reflect on your decision
- May generate AI usage and diagnostic metadata for reliability, abuse prevention, rate limits, and cost controls
- Is not used by us to train our own models
Google Gemini & Anthropic Claude — AI Text Processing
AI text features are primarily powered by Google's Gemini API. Anthropic's Claude API is used as a fallback when Gemini is unavailable. We send the text and task context needed to provide the feature. Provider-side processing, abuse monitoring, and retention are governed by the applicable provider terms and privacy notices, including Google's Gemini API terms and Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
iOS & Android Permissions Explained
BreakAway needs these permissions to help you stay focused. Some permissions are platform-specific.
Android Permissions
- Usage Stats Access: Monitors which apps are used and for how long so BreakAway can enforce blocks and show usage insights. Raw app-usage history is processed on your device and is not stored on our servers.
- Accessibility Services: Detects when blocked apps are opened, reads screen content to detect doom scrolling, reads browser URLs to block distracting websites, navigates away from blocked apps, and displays helpful blocking screens. Accessibility-derived blocking decisions are processed on your device; analytics and support data are handled separately as described in this policy.
- Screen Overlay Permission: Creates blocking screens over restricted apps when you need that extra support.
- Phone Permission: Prevents BreakAway from interfering with important calls by pausing blocking notifications during conversations.
- Battery Optimization Exemption: Ensures accessibility services work consistently without interruptions, keeping your focus protection reliable.
- Notifications: Delivers reminders, competition updates, friend requests, support replies, and other app notifications you enable.
- Installed Apps / Package Query: Lets BreakAway list and categorize installed apps so you can select apps to block and apply time-waster settings.
- Exact Alarms, Boot, Wake Lock, and Foreground Services: Keep time blocks, reminders, widgets, geofences, and blocking services reliable across restarts and background operation.
- Screen Recording / Media Projection: Optional support feature that lets you record a bug report video. Recordings are uploaded only when you choose to submit them.
- Storage / Media Access: Used to select or attach files, audio, images, and videos that you choose to upload, and to cache media needed by the app.
iOS Permissions
- Screen Time / Family Controls (FamilyControls entitlement): Required to use Apple's Screen Time API for app blocking. This is a restricted entitlement explicitly approved by Apple. It allows BreakAway to shield selected apps and monitor device activity through Apple's DeviceActivity framework. Raw screen-time activity data is processed on device and is not stored on our servers.
- Camera: Used to take photos you choose to use for profile, support, feedback, or messaging features.
- Photo Library: Used to select photos or videos you choose to upload for profile, support, feedback, or messaging features.
- Face ID: Used to quickly and securely unlock the app.
- Notifications: Used to deliver focus reminders, streak alerts, and task notifications.
Both Platforms
- Location (Foreground & Background): Used for geofence-based task reminders. When you set a location reminder (e.g., "remind me to do a focus session when I arrive at work"), BreakAway monitors your location in the background so it can trigger the reminder at the right place even when the app is closed. Live location monitoring is evaluated on your device. If task sync is enabled, saved task reminder details, including location reminder information, may sync to our backend so your tasks can be restored across devices.
Location Data — Full Disclosure
This app collects location data to enable geofence-based task reminders even when the app is closed or not in use. Location is accessed in the background to detect when you enter or exit places you have personally set as reminder locations. Live location monitoring happens on your device. If task sync is enabled, saved task reminder details, including location reminder information, may sync to our backend so your tasks can be restored across devices. You can disable location access at any time in your device settings, which will turn off location-based reminders.
Your App Usage Data
Raw app usage data and screen-time information are processed locally on your device. We do not store raw screen-time history on our servers. We may process related product analytics, account status, rewards, support, task sync, chat, social, competition, and AI feature data as described in this policy.
Location Data
BreakAway requests access to your precise location, including background location, for geofence-based task reminders. When you create a location reminder in the app, BreakAway monitors your location in the background to fire a notification when you arrive at or leave a place you have defined. Live geofence evaluation happens on your device. If task sync is enabled, saved task reminder details, including location reminder information, may sync to our backend so your tasks can be restored across devices.
- What we access: Your precise GPS coordinates, evaluated on-device against geofences you have set.
- What we do NOT do: We do not sell location data, use it for advertising, or build a location history of where you go.
- Your control: You can revoke location permission at any time. On Android: Settings → Apps → BreakAway → Permissions → Location. On iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → BreakAway. This disables location-based reminders but does not affect any other app functionality.
Data Security
We use encryption in transit and security measures designed to protect the data we handle. Raw screen-time data stays on your device, while account, subscription, rewards, support, analytics, task sync, chat, social, competition, and optional AI data may be processed by our servers or third-party providers as described in this policy.
Children's Privacy
BreakAway is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, do not use BreakAway. If we learn that we collected personal information from a child under 13 without appropriate consent, we will delete it.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child provided personal information to BreakAway, contact us at support@breakaway-app.com.
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, including under laws such as the New Jersey Data Privacy Act, California Consumer Privacy Act/CPRA, and other U.S. state privacy laws, you may have rights regarding your personal data:
- Access: Request to see what personal data we hold about you
- Correct: Request correction of inaccurate personal data
- Delete: Request deletion of your personal data
- Portability: Request a copy of certain personal data in a portable format
- Opt-out: Opt out of sale, sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising, targeted advertising, profiling with legal or similarly significant effects, or other processing where applicable
We do not currently sell personal data for money and do not currently share personal data for cross-context behavioral advertising. We use Google Analytics on our website for aggregate traffic and conversion measurement, with advertising storage and ad personalization disabled. We do not currently use Meta Pixel or advertising SDKs for targeted advertising. If that changes, we will update this policy and provide any required privacy choices before enabling those uses.
To exercise privacy rights, contact us at support@breakaway-app.com or use the app settings where available. We may need to verify your request. You may use an authorized agent where applicable law allows it.
Appeals Process: If we deny your request and applicable law gives you a right to appeal, you may appeal by replying to our decision email or contacting support@breakaway-app.com with "Privacy Appeal" in the subject line.
How to Delete Your Data
You can delete your account and eligible associated data at any time. Here's how to start account deletion in BreakAway:
Step-by-Step Deletion Process:
- Open BreakAway: Launch the BreakAway app on your device
- Go to Settings: Tap the Settings (gear) icon in the bottom navigation
- Access Data Management: Tap on "Privacy & Security"
- Choose Delete Option: In the Data Management section, you'll see three options:
- Export Your Data — Download a copy of your data
- Delete Usage History — Remove only your app usage history
- Delete Account — Permanently delete your account and eligible associated data
- Confirm Deletion: Tap "Delete Account" (red button with person icon)
- Final Confirmation: Confirm in the dialog that appears. This action cannot be undone.
What Gets Deleted
When you delete your account, the following local data is permanently removed from your device:
- Your linked sign-in connections and local account state
- All app usage history and statistics
- Your streak count and progress data
- All app blocking settings and preferences
- Cached app icons and category data
- Any stored notification preferences
This action cannot be undone. All your local progress will be lost permanently.
Server-Side Data
The in-app Delete Account flow deletes or de-identifies eligible account records, profile pictures uploaded through BreakAway, support media, feedback attachments, and authentication records where applicable. Friend and group chat messages may remain in conversations with your account identifier detached where applicable. Some limited records may remain where retention is required for security, fraud prevention, legal, tax, payment, dispute, or audit purposes. If deletion fails or you need additional help, contact support@breakaway-app.com.
Partial Data Deletion:
If you only want to delete your usage history while keeping your account, use the "Delete Usage History" option instead. This removes your app usage data but preserves your account settings.
Web Deletion Requests:
If you cannot access the app or already uninstalled it, you can request account and associated data deletion by emailing support@breakaway-app.com with the subject "BreakAway Account Deletion Request." Include the email address or sign-in method associated with your BreakAway account so we can verify and process the request. If you have an active App Store or Google Play subscription, cancel it through the store as described in our Terms; deleting your BreakAway account does not cancel store-managed subscriptions.
Data Export Before Deletion:
Before deleting your account, you can export your data using the "Export Your Data" option. This creates a JSON file with all your information that you can save or share.
Account Recovery:
Once you delete your account, it cannot be recovered. Linked Google, Apple, or email sign-in connections will be permanently removed where applicable. You can create a new account, but previous account data will be gone.
How We Disclose Data
We disclose personal data only as needed to operate BreakAway, provide requested features, comply with law, protect users and the service, or complete transactions you initiate. Depending on which features you use, data may be disclosed to:
- Service providers: Companies that provide hosting, authentication, storage, analytics, AI processing, push notifications, billing infrastructure, support, security, and similar services.
- App stores and payment processors: Apple, Google, and related payment infrastructure for subscriptions, purchase validation, refunds, fraud prevention, and account continuity.
- Other users: People in your friend list, direct messages, group chats, competitions, or shared experiences may see the profile, chat, challenge, message, and progress information that the feature is designed to show them.
- Legal, safety, and enforcement recipients: Courts, regulators, law enforcement, rights holders, or other parties when we believe disclosure is required or appropriate to comply with law, enforce our Terms, respond to copyright or safety issues, prevent fraud or abuse, or protect rights, property, or safety.
- Business transfers: If ListenToMe LLC is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, or sale of assets, data may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to appropriate protections.
Legal Bases & International Processing
ListenToMe LLC is based in the United States, and BreakAway's service providers may process data in the United States and other countries. Privacy laws in those countries may differ from the laws where you live.
If you are in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or a similar jurisdiction that requires a legal basis for processing, our legal bases may include:
- Contract: To provide BreakAway, subscriptions, account access, support, chats, competitions, AI features, and other requested features.
- Legitimate interests: To improve and secure BreakAway, prevent fraud and abuse, measure product performance, debug issues, enforce our Terms, and communicate about the service.
- Consent: Where required for optional permissions, marketing communications, or other processing that depends on your permission.
- Legal obligations: To comply with tax, accounting, consumer protection, app-store, copyright, law-enforcement, and other legal requirements.
Where applicable, you may have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, withdraw consent, or lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Third-Party Services
BreakAway uses the following third-party services to provide core functionality:
- Google Play Billing (Android): Handles subscription payments on Android securely. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but not your payment details.
- Apple In-App Purchases (iOS): Handles subscription payments on iOS securely via StoreKit. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but not your payment details.

- Anthropic Claude AI: Fallback AI provider used when Gemini is unavailable. Subject to Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
- PostHog: Session replay and product analytics. PostHog records in-app interactions and analytics events. Subject to PostHog's Privacy Policy.
Policy Updates
We may update this privacy policy as BreakAway evolves to serve committed users better. We'll notify you of any changes through the app and update the date above.
Privacy-Specific Safeguards
This policy is about data handling, not app rules. The practical privacy controls to look for in BreakAway are permission prompts, account deletion, export and support workflows, diagnostic boundaries, and the separation between local device signals, cloud account records, app-store purchase status, and optional social features.
- Permission explanations: iOS Screen Time, Android Accessibility, notifications, photos, and sign-in permissions should be requested only when a feature needs them.
- AI boundaries: AI Task Manager and Reality Check AI process the text needed to answer the request; users should avoid sending sensitive information that is not needed for the task.
- Social visibility: Friends, chats, competitions, referrals, and group progress reveal only the information those features are designed to share.
- Lifecycle controls: Support requests, exports, deletion, analytics, fraud prevention, and security logs follow different retention needs, which is why this policy separates each category.
No Current Sale or Targeted-Ad Sharing
BreakAway does not sell personal information for money and does not currently share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising.
